DEADLY CAMPAIGN
A Last Laff Mystery
From Midnight Ink

Deadly Campaign

"Professional comedian Channing Hayes goes amateur detective in his rousing encore performance...Orloff has put together another winning routine, and mystery buffs will enjoy the fresh venue of a comedy club, not to mention a soft-boiled amateur sleuth case."
-- Library Journal

"DEADLY CAMPAIGN has it all—political intrigue, family warfare and, best of all, a hero. If the line between comedy and tragedy is indeed thin, then Orloff is a master tightrope walker."
-- P.J. Parrish, New York Times bestselling author of THE KILLING SONG

Comedy club owner and occasional performer Channing Hayes thought the comedy business was tough, but it's a stroll in the park compared to politics. When he and his business partner Artie attend a congressional campaign event for their friend Thomas Lee's nephew, masked thugs storm in and break up Lee's restaurant with baseball bats. The candidate's people insist that the police not be involved, so Lee asks Channing to investigate. As Channing searches for answers, he finds himself immersed in a corrupt world of payoffs, gangs, illicit affairs, blackmail—and murder . . .

Even in the cynical world of stand-up comedy, murder is no laughing matter.

Comedian Channing Hayes has survived a tragic auto accident that claimed the life of his fiancée Lauren. Physically scarred and emotionally crippled, he’s put his performing career on hold, resigned to getting his laughs vicariously as co-owner of The Last Laff Comedy Club. There, he schools Lauren’s sister Heather in the fine art of stand-up.

During the club’s comedy showcase, Heather skips out on her set. No call, no note, no trail of breadcrumbs. Concerned, Channing searches for his AWOL protégée, clashing with her vindictive father, a rival club owner, and a gaggle of comic-wannabes—all while struggling to get his own life back on track. Heather’s ex-lovers start turning up dead, and it’s clear she’s running from something a lot more terrifying than a bad case of stage fright. After Channing learns some horrible truths, he must fight to save her—from herself, and from a man out to destroy them both.

Talk to anyone in Reston, Virginia, and they'll say Josh Handleman's dad, "Honest Abe," was a real mensch. But when Josh returns home to bury his estranged father, he gets the shock of his life: his thrifty dad was filthy rich. Oy!

Who was this man who donated millions to charity, invested in the dreams of Josh's friends, and shared his home with a strange vodka-swilling Russian? Apparently, Abe collected diamonds too. But when Josh can't find the gems, he begins to wonder if his dad's death was truly an accident.

Hounded by grief and remorse, Josh resolves to find his dad's diamond stash—which could be his inheritance and proof of his father's love. What he doesn't realize is that this emotionally charged treasure hunt is taking him closer to his dad's killer.
